Attention to Detail for Career Success

| November 19, 2010

There is quite a bit of stuff you can do to progress your career. I like to think of it from a holistic approach. You need to produce positive results, get along with your co-workers, understand the industry…the list goes on. As young professionals, it can definitely be overwhelming. Working to advance my career often feels like I’m walking on eggshells. Let’s check out some of the things I’ve learned along the way.

Mistakes Do Matter

Growing up, we have all heard that mistakes aren’t always a bad thing. My grandpa always told me that “it okay to make mistakes, Tyler, as long as you are learning from them.” That makes sense. But understand your mistakes come with real consequences, often in terms of real dollars. I think a better saying is “there are no stupid questions.” If you’re in doubt about how to do something, ask those around you (especially the person you are working for and cares the most about the result). They will understand that you are young and inexperienced but are respectful of the company’s time and resources.

Dress Appropriately

We hear this all over the Internet, but it’s really important. Understand what is appropriate in your office and stick to it. In an outside sales position like mine, it’s important that I’m always looking professional (that means on Friday, too). I have a co-worker who goes a little too casual on Fridays sometimes; they might not know it, but people make comments about their attire. The fact that I’m usually in a suit on a Friday shows that I’m not slacking off and ready to work, unlike some of my counterparts.

Every Task is Important

My friends complain to me all the time about the mundane tasks they have to complete. They talk about how their VPs will ask them to do these small tasks like make copies or deliver documents. Are you kidding me? You have access to your VPs and an opportunity to make their jobs easier and contribute to their success. When I’m asked to do something like that, I’m excited to show my bosses that I’m capable and reliable. Not to mention, it gives me an opportunity to see what they are working on and talk with them about it.

Plus, think of the opposite: Not doing a good job doing these things will show that you are pretty much worthless. Right?

Careers are journeys. They are long, complex journeys, and each day we are faced with little forks in the road where we have to make decisions. Being proactive about the small things – like what we talked about above – can have a big impact when these efforts compound over time. Do the easy things right!
